Mains Powered Smoke & Heat Alarms
With Battery Back Up
These types of detectors are known in the industry as Grade D. This simply means that they are powered from the 230v mains electricity supply. They also have a battery back up built in, encase of a power failure, they have to be linked together. A good example for linking them together is, in the event of a fire in your kitchen in the middle of the night it will set all the detectors in the house off including the one closest to your bedroom were you will be sleeping. This gives you a better opportunity to get out of the premises. This Grade of system is most common in domestic homes or tenanted rentals.
Batery Powered Only Smoke & Heat Detectors
BS 5839: Pt.6 acknowledges the advantages of the single, battery powered smoke alarm. They are simple to install and offer protection at very low cost. Battery powered smoke alarms conforming to BS EN 14604:2005 are recommended. Battery powered smoke alarms are typically suitable for owner-occupied buildings (existing buildings) with up to two storeys. Please note: if your property has multiple levels, it is recommended to have interlinked alarms. This is to ensure you receive the earliest possible warning of fire. This type of detection is not suitable for rental or commercial properties.
Mains Powered Smoke & Heat Alarms With Battery Back Up & Radio Link Technology
Supplied with a radio-frequency base plate as standard, mains powered radio-interlinked smoke and heat alarms do not require interconnecting cables between each unit. Up to 50 smoke and heat alarms can be wirelessly interlinked within a single system. If one alarm is activated it will send a wireless signal to all other interconnected alarms, causing them to also sound and ensuring you are alerted as quickly as possible. Alarms are fitted with a back-up battery to provide power during a mains failure, conforming to the Grade D standard. Where the radio link comes in handy is in properties that need a system retro fitted and running a link cable through the fabric of the building is not an option. This saves on damage to the fabric of the building (eg tracking walls and lifting floorboards.) It also saves on the disruption and the engineers time, making it a more cost effective solution in some cases.
COMMERCIAL FIRE ALARM SYSTEMS

Businesses in Northern Ireland are required by law to provide adequate means for raising the alarm in the event of a fire or an emergency. It is the responsible person of the business that must ensure that the Fire Alarm is regularly maintained to its relevant standards (BS-5839). The design and level of the system needed will be detailed in the fire risk assessment. The fire alarm should be Inspected and Tested by a competent person quarterly in-line with BS-5839. Supply Fire Alarm Equipment
Conroy Fire Protection can supply a wide range of fire alarm equipment. Not only do you get the equipment but you have a knowledgeable company at the end of the phone. Sometimes it is easier and more cost effective to have you electrical contractor install the system as they are already running cables through the building. After they have installed the system, Fire Safety NI can come to inspect, test and commission it if needed.
